FLÂNEUR/FLÂNEUSE
2025

The project explores the tension between restriction and freedom, examining how oppressive systems seek to fix individuals in place while creativity persistently finds subtle ways to wander and endure. The figure of the flâneur/flâneuse becomes a critical lens—the drifting gaze tracing hidden pathways of freedom within constrained spaces, whether musical, political, or social.

Two identical points appear in both paintings, marking BraÈ™ov and Bucharest. They symbolise the static positions imposed by restrictive environments, while the works’ versos evoke movement—the meandering course of freedom.

Blue Painting reflects jazz as a space of both freedom and limitation. Although often described as having a “wandering spirit,” jazz historically confined women to vocal performance, excluding them from instruments. The two pink dots—symbols of women—stand against a blue background representing the jazz milieu. On the verso, brass-like rivers flow from these points, suggesting how women’s voices and music have travelled and asserted freedom, echoing the flâneuse’s steps through the city’s overlooked details.

Red Painting turns to jazz under communism. The red background embodies oppression, while two blue points mark jazz’s constrained position. On the verso, brass rivers emerge once again, evoking the music’s improvisational resilience—its capacity to adapt, resist, and move beyond political boundaries.
