DISMAYLAND
explores the disillusionment of a generation that grew up amidst "modernised poverty" in Romania, captivated by distant promises of a better future without realistic prospects for change. The works reflect the failures of the socio-political system over the past 29 years and resonate with the ongoing struggles in contemporary society. Through non-historical figures and moments, the exhibition critiques the unfulfilled promises of Western-style progress that have remained elusive.
Drawing on the relationship between space and human condition, the project presents neglected figures and settings, symbolising the disconnect between projected visions of improvement and the harsh realities many face. Incorporating maps and spatial representations highlights how perceptions of reality are shaped, much like the limited visions offered by media such as Columbia Pictures and Disney. These elements underscore the continued disparity between Romania's current situation and the expectations set in 1989 and those of the Western world.
